Brief History:

The cemetery was established in 1876 by the Port Adelaide council as a general community cemetery.  The Authority assumed control on July 1, 1987.  The cemetery represents a significant part of the history of the local community which, over that period changed from a grouping of small communities to a large metropolitan council.

Cheltenham has a unique record in Australian cemetery history, in that it is the first cemetery to become totally full and subsequently receveloped.
